Deutschland ist Weltmeister! Yes, after 24 years of waiting, 13 September 2014 marked the day Germany finally won the World Cup; and I was lucky enough to witness that moment right here in Germany, in the heart of the celebration.
I have to admit, I am by all means no fan of football. Before I came here, I had never watched a full football match. But you know what they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. At my friends' suggestions, I started watching football hoping that it would give me some topics for small talk with my German friends. And I got into it, quite a bit. Say, how can you not get into football when the whole country is on fire with the World Cup? I became a follower of the German team, wishing them to win. I seriously didn't want the festivity of this country to end so soon.
The final match came. I went to Cologne South with Kristina, Patrick, Anh and Simas for public viewing. It was crazy, utterly crazy even before the match started. We had a hard time finding a place to watch the game because everywhere was packed with people. They were even sitting on the pavement! The whole scenario was like a mini-carnival filled with people dressing up with all kind of German things, e.g. flags, hats, glasses, wigs. And of course, beer; people were drinking nonstop.
German officially won the World Cup! The whole area exploded with cries, joy, and laughter. Fireworks were set off. People were dancing and singing "Super Deutschland! Super Deutschland! Olé, Olé, Olé." People were crying, yelling. People were kissing. It was chaos, a very beautiful chaos to be exact. The said-to-be most individualistic Germans were abandoning their own zones and became one with the crowd. At that moment, everyone was sharing the same joy. There were no strangers on the street. It was just utterly incredible.
Also, thank the "buddies" that let me shower with their beer. Literally. At least two times we were showered with beer when mingling with the overjoyed crowd. It's so hard to describe feelings with words. I was more than cheerful. I was and am grateful for all the moments. I'm more than lucky to be here in Germany!
Writing with joy from the bottom of my heart
